TL;DR: Hello internet, we have news! Enki, the mobile app for professionals to sharpen their tech skills, has been rebuilt from the ground up, and we invite you all to try it!

The app is now accessible to beginners and non-devs too. Our new skill maps let you navigate to any part of the library. And we’ve added features to learn with your colleagues, friends, and the Enki community which is now over a million-learner strong.

Update: we were Apple’s App of the Day in 118 countries, and #1 Product of the Day on ProductHunt!

If you want to just go ahead and try the app, download it via this link. Otherwise, carry on to read our story.

We started Enki with the goal of using technology to dramatically lower the barriers to professional continuous learning. This is hands down the best way to close the widening gap between what skills companies need — and those in the market today.

We started with serving developers, who love our app because it’s the only one with content for all levels, no matter the experience. Over a million have used the app so far. Here are some more stats:

  • 18.8 million: the total number of lessons Enki learners have completed
  • SQL (22%), Python (21%), JavaScript (19%), Web (16%): the relative popularity of the top Enki skills
  • 234 days: the longest daily streak of any Enki learner (not in our team!)
  • 1654: the most lessons any Enki user has completed
  • 1,616: the number of successful contributions within the open-source Enki curriculum GitHub repo
  • Google: the top company on Enki, with over 500 employees using the app
  • Apple, Accenture, IBM, Amazon, Microsoft: the top 5 companies in pursuit of them!

Our active users love how they can learn new things in just minutes, and while on the go — during their commutes, between meetings, or before heading to sleep:

But there were a lot of things that the previous version of the app was missing. First, the fact that we limited the experience to one lesson per day (initially designed as a way to help build a daily habit) frustrated our most active users. The second was that our content could be more accessible to complete beginners and those that are non-technical. They needed more guidance:

We’ve addressed this feedback across our whole library of content. We’ve also added a -lot- of new content and features to the app. Here’s the full summary of what’s new:

1. Now accessible to all working with tech

We’ve restructured our content completely to make it accessible for anyone. Yes, even for that guy in the office for whom writing code is as normal as playing ping pong in a scuba diving suit. Send the app to your colleagues and friends who want to rely less on devs for anything they need to get done, or just want to more productive conversations with them!

And so with Enki 2.0, we’ve expanded to include non-coders, and anyone who is curious about or works with tech.

So why is this a big deal?

Even if you don’t want to be a developer, there are many benefits to learning even the basics of technical topics: better conversations with developers, higher quality specs, being able to help out on your team in new and valuable ways, new perspectives to problem solving. And it’s a huge asset when working with and analyzing data — which is relevant for pretty much anyone that wants to grow their product or business more quickly.

Enki has now made this much, much easier — both to get over the hump of getting started with something new, and to keep improving.

2. Now with a LOT more content

We’ve doubled the number of lessons within JavaScript, SQL, HTML, CSS, Java, Linux, git and Python. And we’ve removed the one workout per topic per day limitation — you can now work through as much of the library as you like on any day.

We’ve added several data modules, as well as Comp Sci, MongoDB, Docker, Blockchain, Security, and React as a separate skill.

3. Learn with others

We’ve added a new team section, so you can invite your colleagues and friends and motivate each other to learn. We’ve added upvoting and threading to comments. And we’ve made it easier to contribute edits to the open-source content library — which has already had hundreds of contributors.

4. New design!

The app has been redesigned from the ground up. Now featuring both a light and dark mode. The new skills maps make it easy to access any part of the curriculum within 3 taps. And… we completely rewrote the app in React Native. (Boy, that was a big and fun project — but that’s for another post!)

See you on the dark side (or if you must, the light side; choose whichever one you want in settings)!

Yours,

Team Enki

PS. Thanks again Apple for featuring us (and the cool design below)!
